Parent Mentor

mentorThe Parent Mentor program trains community members who establish a helping relationship in a household where children are at-risk for, or have suffered from abuse and neglect. Through weekly home visits, the Parent Mentor strives to increase knowledge of parenting skills, helping to strengthen families so they may remain together or reunify.

These skills include learning alternative discipline methods; improving household organization and maintenance; managing finances; and establishing household routines. Mentors also connect families to critical community-based resources to eliminate their sense of powerlessness and isolation. This requires linking parents to schools, mental health centers, substance abuse programs, churches and other support services.

All Parent Mentors are supervised by CSR staff who assist with strategies, interventions and accessing community resources.

The frequency, intensity and amount of time spent with parents is flexible and determined on a case-by-case basis. CSR recruits Mentors who are parents themselves, share the same ethnicity, culture and language, and live within the same community as the clients that we serve, so that Mentors can easily accommodate a parent’s schedule.
